How to Recover Deleted Files on Windows, Mac, Android, and iPhone

Apr 7, 2026

What’s Happening

When you delete a file, it isn’t immediately erased. Instead, the system marks that space as available, and the file remains recoverable until overwritten by new data.

Quick Fix

 Before trying anything:

  • Stop using the device or drive immediately
  • Check:
    • Recycle Bin / Trash
    • Recently Deleted (Photos, Cloud apps)
  • If found → restore it

Step-by-Step Fix

1. Check Recycle Bin / Trash

Windows

  • Open Recycle Bin (Desktop)
  • Locate the file
  • Right-click → Restore

Mac

  • Open Trash
  • Find the file
  • Right-click → Put Back

2. Check Recently Deleted (Cloud & Apps)

Many apps store deleted files separately.

Google Photos

  • Open app
  • Go to Library → Bin
  • Select file → Restore

iCloud (Photos / Files)

  • Go to Recently Deleted
  • Select file → Recover

OneDrive / Google Drive

  • Open Trash / Bin
  • Restore file

3. Restore from Backup (If Available)

Windows (File History)

  • Go to folder where file existed
  • Right-click → Restore previous versions
  • Select version → Restore

Mac (Time Machine)

  • Open folder where file was
  • Launch Time Machine
  • Scroll back in time
  • Click Restore

4. Use File Recovery Software (Advanced Recovery)

If the file is not found anywhere, use recovery tools.

Important Rule

Install recovery software on a different drive (Not the one you’re recovering from).

Popular Tools

  • Recuva (Windows)
  • EaseUS Data Recovery
  • Disk Drill (Mac/Windows)

Steps

  • Install tool on another drive
  • Run scan on affected drive
  • Wait for scan completion
  • Preview recoverable files
  • Restore to a different location

5. Recover from External or Backup Sources

Check:

  • External hard drives
  • USB devices
  • Email attachments
  • Messaging apps (WhatsApp, Slack, etc.)

Advanced Fixes

1. Use Deep Scan Mode

  • Finds files not visible in quick scans
  • Slower but more effective

2. Try Multiple Recovery Tools

  • Different tools detect different file fragments

3. Use Professional Data Recovery

  • For physically damaged drives
  • Expensive but highest success rate

When to Escalate

  • Important file not found after recovery attempts
  • Drive not detected
  • Clicking/noise from hard drive
